Athlete of the Month: Becki Kennedy

Last fall, Becki Kennedy (’10) and Megan Lapp (’11) left athletic director John Brown’s office determined to raise the necessary $12,000 to start the Gymnastics Team.

After meeting with superintendent Bella Wong multiple times and organizing countless fundraisers, the team began with an initial group of 21 girls.

The team returned for its second season and currently has an undefeated record of 4-0, largely due to team founder and captain, Kennedy. Her favorite event is floor, and her main event is all-around (a combination of all events).

Kennedy began her gymnastics career 12 years ago at Planet Gymnastics in Natick. After a few years she transferred to Gym Express, where she currently competes. The major difference between club and high school gymnastics is the time commitment. “It’s more relaxing, but we definitely work hard. By the end of the season people fulfill their goals that they set at the beginning,” said Kennedy.

Another major difference is the team aspect. Competing for club is more for individual success where as a high school team focuses on the whole team to succeed. “I love the team. I am really glad that its back.”

Kennedy is a decorated gymnast. Just last year she won first for all-around at states.

Her gymnast career ends at the high school level however. Elon University, the school Kennedy will attend next year, does not offer gymnastics at the varsity or club level.

“To be on a college gymnastics team you have to be at one of the highest levels. I don’t think my body could take another four years of gymnastics,” said Kennedy modestly.

Kennedy says the end of this season will be really heard for her because of the time and commitment she put into gymnastics. With half the season left, Kennedy will ensure that the team works hard, and has a fun bonding experience along the way.
